I decided to write this post after reading “ Fantasy tropes and clichés ” on Salomon Xeno's blog. I believe that instead of talking about Fantasy clichés, we should talk about the fantasy of clichés, as if to indicate a common way of identifying the genre with specific elements, without which Fantasy does not exist. It is these elements that made me distance myself from the genre, or rather from most novels of this narrative genre. I like writing and reading about fantasy more than fantasy, including in this literary macro-genre everything that deviates from everyday reality.
After reading the splendid essay The Morning of the Magicians by Pauwels and Bergier I understood that my favorite genre is fantastic realism, a fantasy that therefore starts from everyday reality, which can indeed arise from an invented but real world. A fantasy that rediscovers the origins of man, which develops from the folklore and myths of Phone Number Data populations, which explores the mysteries of the planet. Fantasy clichés The omnipresent magician : he can change his name, clothes, powers, but there is always a man endowed with knowledge and magical powers who advises, leads, convinces. The winning talisman : a ring, a sword, any weapon, a book, there is always an object to look for, recover, take elsewhere, use to defeat Evil.
The dark enemy : wears black clothes, uses symbols of death, lives in the North or in a tower or in any case in an evil land and wants to take control of the world. The hero in spite of himself : he is one of us, preferably a boy, pure of heart and spirit. He doesn't have any skills, but he accepts the challenge and will win. Fantastic creatures : whether they are dragons, unicorns or other creatures invented by the writer, there is always some beast ready to hinder the advance of the good guys and some other ready to help them. The disadvantage of the good : those who defend freedom and justice are always inferior in number of fighters, weapons and powers compared to Evil. The victory of Good : in the end, however, after many ordeals, Good manages to defeat the forces of Evil.
